R.A.I.N.

Emotions are precious allies. If we don’t allow ourselves to feel emotions, they will come out in very disregulated ways. Anger with your boss or colleague may turn into rage with your children. Unexpressed guilt can turn into low self-esteem and even shame.
Fear that has been pushed away can come out as panic attacks and overwhelming anxiety disorders, sleepless nights etc.
Something that we might brush away as being nothing may eventually turn into something much greater with time.
That is why it is important to know how to work with emotions when they appear.
We’re going to use a tool which is known as the acronym RAIN.
R = Recognise. Ask the question ‘ What am I feeling right now’ ? This will help to pull you away from the story in your mind. It will give you perspective.
A = Allow. Allow and accept all the feelings. We usually try to think our way out of a problem. We try to excape negative feelings. We distract ourselves ( phone, laptop, TV, social media, food, shopping, drugs, alcohol …)
Allow means staying with and being open to what is occurring.
I = Investigate. Take note of what is going on. How do the feelings unfold ? the body might be contracting, tight . Your breathing might be accelerating.
The N originally stood for ‘non-identity meaning that you don’t take it personally.
We can also use the N for Nurture. This means you send loving kindness to your emotions. You say ‘ I hear you’, you are welcome here.
